four-base cutter

four-base cutter
A type II restriction endonuclease with a four-nucleotide recognition site. Because any particular sequence of four bases occurs more frequently by chance than one of six bases, four-base cutters cleave more frequently than six-base cutters, and therefore generate, on average, smaller restriction fragments.
Synonyms: four-base-pair-cutter, four-cutter.
