shotgun genome sequencing

shotgun genome sequencing
A strategy for sequencing a whole genome, in which the genomic DNA is initially fragmented into pieces small enough to be sequenced. Specialized computer software is then used to piece together the individual sequences to create long contiguous tracts of sequenced DNA.
